[Takadanobaba] Baba Rock Opened on the Site of a "Famed Cafe" | The 36-Year Legacy of Cafe Misty and the Gourmet History of Ura-Baba
Please bear with me for a little trip down memory lane today.
Our restaurant opened in Takadanobaba in July 2012. While rereading the blog from when we first opened, I came across a story about the "previous restaurant" at this location, so I wanted to introduce it again.
🧭 1 | Baba Rock is located on a street known as "Ura-Baba"
Our restaurant is located on the street between the Kanda River and Waseda Dori, about a 3-minute walk from Takadanobaba Station. Locally, this area has long been known as "Ura-Baba" (back-Baba).
Unlike the hustle and bustle of the main streets, Ura-Baba is lined with independently owned izakaya and restaurants. Traditional pubs and new gourmet spots share the same street, making it a delightful area just to walk through.
👉 If you're going out for a drink in Takadanobaba, it's savvy to step into the back street. Many of our guests say, "I first discovered this place when a regular brought me along."
☕ 2 | The Predecessor: The Legendary 36-Year-Old Cafe "Misty"

Before Baba Rock, this exact spot was home to a cafe called "Misty," which opened back in 1975. It operated until 2011, boasting a remarkable 36-year history!
It was a deeply beloved local establishment. When explaining the location to neighbors, saying "It's where Misty used to be" was instantly understood by everyone. Taking over such a cherished spot came with quite a bit of pressure... Ah, I remember feeling a strong sense of responsibility back then. Haha.
Even though the aroma of coffee has been replaced by the scent of charcoal, it remains a place where people gather.
🔥 3 | From a Cafe's Former Site to a Robatayaki Izakaya
In 2012, we opened "Sumiyaki Choja Baba Rock," a robatayaki (charcoal grill) and sashimi izakaya, in this very location. We feature robatayaki grilled right over the sunken hearth before your eyes, daily-sourced fresh sashimi, and a carefully curated selection of Japanese sake.
"We aim to be a restaurant rooted in the local community and supported by everyone"—the sentiment I wrote on our blog when we first opened remains unchanged to this day.
Thanks to your support, we are celebrating our 14th year since opening. Thanks to our loyal patrons, we have been able to continue as an izakaya that can be used for a wide range of occasions, from an after-work drink to banquets. Thank you so much!
🍶 4 | When Looking for Good Food in Takadanobaba, Be Sure to Visit Ura-Baba
Centered around our signatureGaburi Chicken (whole grilled chicken), the combination of the savory aromas of robatayaki and Japanese sake is our signature offering built up at this location.
When you are looking for an izakaya or restaurant in Takadanobaba, or want to find a great gourmet spot, please venture just one street back to this place, where the memories of Misty still linger.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you again tonight!
