[Takadanobaba] The Origin of the Name "Sumiyaki Choja Baba Rock" | A Triple Meaning of Asakusa Roku-ku, ROCK, and Folktales

What does "Sumiyaki Choja Baba Rock" actually mean?

Thankfully, people still ask us this often. Actually, this store name is a "triple meaning" loaded with three concepts at the time of opening. Today, we will reveal the secret with a slight exaggeration. Haha.

🤝 1 | "Roku" (Six) because the restaurant started with 6 founding members

Our restaurant was realized in July 2012 when 6 members came together.

A chef with 20 years of single-minded dedication to his craft and his two apprentices, a sharp designer and contractor, and a PR representative. Combining our strengths in our respective fields, we created a single izakaya on a back street in Takadanobaba.

The "Roku" (Six) in "Rokku" embodies our feelings toward these six people.

🏮 2 | To be a vibrant, glamorous restaurant and town like "Asakusa Roku-ku"

The once-prosperous entertainment district "Asakusa Park Roku-ku" (commonly known as Asakusa Roku-ku). Lined with movie theaters and playhouses, and bustling with izakaya and restaurants, it was one of Tokyo's premier gourmet and entertainment districts.

We wanted to make our restaurant and neighborhood as glamorous and vibrant as that street. Takadanobaba Roku-ku... which evolved into the name "Baba Rock".

👉 By the way, the street where our restaurant is located is a drinking district locally known as "Ura-Baba." Lined with independently owned izakaya and gourmet spots, it shares a certain atmosphere reminiscent of Asakusa Roku-ku.

🎸 3 | Bringing a fresh breeze to the izakaya industry: The spirit of "ROCK"

There is another meaning layered into "Rokku": ROCK. Sorry if that's a bit cliché. Haha.

We want to spark a fresh gust of wind in the izakaya industry. With that feeling in mind, we designed a slightly bold restaurant featuring a robatayaki hearth right in the middle of the room.

⛏️ 4 | "Sumiyaki Choja" (Charcoal Burner Millionaire) comes from a folktale title

"Sumiyaki Choja" is the title of a traditional folktale about a charcoal burner who finds a gold mine and becomes wealthy.

The work of burning charcoal eventually leads to treasure. For our restaurant, which grills dishes over charcoal, it was the most auspicious name imaginable. It's a gold rush. A rags-to-riches story. Haha.
